im looking at this picture and i just realized that every single person that competed got a medal. because there were only three teams everyone ended up with a medal. that’s how small our federation is. by paying your entry fee you basically guarantee yourself a medal. so now all these people can claim to be national medalists. in some cases people who have only been competing a year are already “two time national medalists” there should be clarification. especially in a federation so small because no one is eliminated. plus it seems funny when everyone in the federation is announced as a multiple time national medalist. everyone who pays, shows up, and competes is entitled to what ever they win, but off the top of my head we have only had north american/national tournaments since 97 meaning only 12 individual medals are possible, yet some people claim eight on nine championships as if they were all in a single division that has spanned the whole history of the federation. it should be listed, such as in dans case that he is a 2x national heavyweight champ and a 3x national openweight champ and a member of the second place team in the club/team competition.

    From Kelly Gneiting,

I feel the same way. We are watering down the acclamation of the entire sport (ie. to the public) when someone sees non-athletic people, or even athletic people claim they’re a national or multiple national medalist. In these cases, many times the judgment is towards the sport, not the individual. I won a team competition once, but I never claim it. If I were to win the Open and Heavyweight I would claim 1 title for that year. The nationals are snapshots in time, thus 1 championship per 1 year means the same as 3 championships per one year to me. We know you were the best FOR THAT YEAR. The real gauge is at the Worlds. Being in a medal match is something, medaling is something, and winning Worlds is something. Then there’s also things like 1)how long has a person stuck around in the sport, 2)how much has someone promoted the sport, 3) the extent of a person’s PR with international athletes and the Japanese, 4) the extent of a person’s knowledge of Japanese culture and terms of sumo, 5) knowing bylaws, rules, and regulations accurately in the sport, etc. etc.
